In 1983 a friend talked Neil into taking an improv class at Second City in London, Ontario where he lived and worked as a writer. From the first class he was "hooked on improv" and rapidly advanced through the Second City workshop system. He helped found London Theatresports and performed weekly improv shows as well as doing stand-up, sketch, and radio comedy. Encouraged by his teachers he moved to Toronto in 1985 to pursue a career in comedy. At Harbourfront Centre Neil became a regular cast member of Theatresports Toronto, performing with Men Without Moustaches and Winkytown Foibles, and guesting with many other teams. He would eventually serve as Workshop Director in the 90's and as Artistic Director in 2000-2001.

In 1986 Neil started a company called, Comedy Consultants, promoting the use of humour in the workplace. For over 10 years he earned his living giving funny talks and workshops on Humour and Creativity. He performed over 800 times to organizations in business, government and healthcare, traveling all across Canada and south of the border as far as Las Vegas. The Globe and Mail praised Neil as "the Steve Martin of Stress Managers". The Financial Post called him "the Jerry Seinfeld of the corporate world". He appeared on many radio and TV shows including Canada AM, Much Music, City-TV and TVO. In 1999 Neil retired from corporate comedy to pursue his first loves, writing, directing and teaching.

Over the years Neil has directed, created and produced some of Canada's most innovative live theatre. He nutured new talent through shows, large and small, and helped raise the profile of performers by serving on the Jury of the Tim Sims Comedy Award and co-producing shows at the Second City in Toronto. He's been lucky enough to work with some of Canada's top comedy talents.
